Land forming

In order to establish suitable grades and slopes of land to meet the desired requirements for irrigation and drainage in particular, the soil should be appropriately moved from one part of the cleared land to the other with simultaneous filling of undesired depressions using suitable earth – moving equipment such as bulldozers, motor graders, and so on. In land forming, contouring or terracing is usually on a large scale while ridging or pitting is on a small scale.

The land forming systems is usually derived from land forming operations, which also includes the following;
  • Terracing – an erosion control measure
  • Soil tilled system – primary tillage, secondary tillage and so on, are usually adopted for seedbed preparation in crop production
  • Irrigation system – flooding, furrow, border strip and so on
  • Drainage system – under drains, open drains and so on.
