1. To preserve food for future use: Food that
is preserve for subsequent uses safe time, finance and man power. It is the
duty of the food technologist to preserve and make provision for food when
needed; the food technologist is an extension of the farmer who is cultivating
the raw material.
2. To feed the teeming million population:
The world population today is at its increasing phase at about seven billion
plus and filled with so many human activities, it is of the obligation of food
technology professionals to work out modality as to the constant feeding of the
growing population.
3. Source of employment: Food technology is a
profession that has provide job employment opportunity for so many job seekers.
It is a department on its own in the school of food production as well as food technology;
as such people are needed to occupy the department, thereby serving as a means
or source of employment.
4. To produce safe food: The human body needs
clean substances to take in due to hygienic purposes, therefore, it is very
important for the food technologists to make sure there are adequate supervision
of the food taking to the consumer in other to make sure that the foods are
free from one form of uncleanness or the other.
5. Generating food choice: Variety is the
spice of life, so therefore, there is need of variety of food generated by food
technologists in other for people to make choice as regard their taste and
finance.
6. To utilize those foods that is otherwise
undesirable: Some of the food eating is desirable to some people. However, it
is the duty of the food technologist to utilize the food such as preparing it
in a way apart from the traditional way of preparing the food. By this the
total utilization of the food is then put to consideration.
7. To produce value added foods: Value added
food has recently been produce by food technology all around which gives
increasingly eye appeal and satisfaction in consumption. This is one major role
in food technology.
8. To produce health foods: Healthy diet
(food) is very essential for human growth. Therefore, food technologists have
taken it upon themselves to make sure healthy and consumable food is provided
for the growing populates for consumption.
9. To produce specialty food (use-specific
foods)
