The chisel
plough is a tool with rigid curved or straight shanks that has relatively
narrow shovel points. It shatters the soil without the complete mixing of
surface materials. Multiple rows of staggered curved shanks are mounted either
rigidly with spring-cushions or spring resets. The chisel plough maybe termed as
a heavy-duty deep cultivator. Interchangeable sweep or any of the other types
of points is attached to the standard. The spring-cushions or spring resets
permits the ground tool to swing back and up and to unlock the point at which
it strikes an obstacle.
The chisel
plough is often used to loosen hard, dry soils before the regular plough is
used. It is useful for stubble-mulch or subsurface tillage practices and
breaking up of hard layers of soils just below the regular plough depth.
