Soil management


Soil management deals with all farm operations, practices and treatments used to protect and enhance soil performance. Management practices which affect soil quality include;
  • Cover crops: Give room for the soil to anchored and covered in off-seasons to protect the soil from been eroded by wind and rain.
  • Tillage: This operation limit the amount of soil disturbance while cultivating a new one and assist in the maintaining of plant residue on the surface of the soil for erosion prevention and water retention.
  • Nutrient management: This can assist to enhance the fertility of the soil and the amount of organic matter content that enhances the functionality and the structure of the soil.
  • Controlling soil traffic: Controlling traffic on the soil surface helps to reduce compaction of soil which can lead to aeration and water infiltration.
  • Crop rotation: Crop rotation helps in the increasing of the amount of plant material left on the surface of the soil during the year to secure the soil from erosion.
