The nature of living things

Living things are multidimensional in nature in terms of definition to life, they possesses so many attribute. Below are some few properties possessed by living things which helps in giving life a meaning?

Growth
Growth requires an organism to take in material from in and out of the environment and organize the material into its own structures. For growth to be accomplished, expansion of some of the energy it acquired during metabolism is needed by an organism. Organism has a pattern for accomplishing the building of growth structures.

Reproduction
Living things possesses the ability for recreation of its offspring; this process is known as reproduction. These offspring are produce while the organisms are still living. Among plants and simple animals, reproduction is often an extension of the growth process. Asexual reproduction involves only one parent, and the resulting cells are usually identical to the parent cell, while more complex organisms engages in a type of reproduction known as sexual reproduction, in which two parents contribute to the formation of a new individual.

Evolution
All living organisms have the capacity to adapt to their environment through the process of evolution. During this period of evolution, transformation occurs in populations, and the organisms in the population become well able to metabolize, respond, as well as reproducing. They develop the strength and abilities to adapt with their environment.

Ecology
Ecology is the science or the study of relationships between organisms and their relationships with their environment. Environment influences all living things that are around it. Living things can change their immediate environment, but non-living things cannot do so.

Metabolism
Rapid turnover of chemical materials are exhibited by living things, which is referred to as metabolism. This in turn involves the exchanges of chemical matter with the external environment and extensive transformations of organic matter within the cells of a living organism. Metabolism generally involves the release or use of chemical energy. Metabolism is not displayed by non-living things.

Responsiveness
All living things are able to responds to stimuli in their external environment. Living things respond to changes in sound, light, heat, chemical and mechanical contact. To observe stimuli, organisms have means for receiving information, such as eyes, ears, and taste buds. To respond effectively to these changes in their environment, organisms must coordinate their responses. A system of nerves and a number of chemical regulators called hormones coordinate activities within an organism.
