The current
controversy in livestock agriculture has led to the promptness of a resurgence of
interest in grass – fed animals, but a high-forage diet does not currently
satisfy the demand of modern animal production. For the animal to make
efficient use of the forage, the energy demands of the rumen micro – organisms,
must be synchronized with the availability of plant proteins. If not, this may leads
to poor protein use, to the need to feed protein concentrate and to N loss to
the environment.
