Continues grazing
This is a system
in which animal graze every time of the day, for example, a range. Here, the
stocking rate is usually low. It is very common on natural pasture where
animals are left to grazing every time.
Advantages
- With continue grazing, animals graze on their preference.
- This is a very cheap way of using the forage. All one does is just to fence the area.
Disadvantages
- One of the disadvantages is that it is only good under low stocking rate.
- It leads to deterioration of pasture due to over grazing by animals and preferential grazing of some species.
- There is the risk of young animal been affect if they are allowed to with the older animals.
Rotational grazing
Rotational grazing
involves the division of pasture into different paddock. One paddock will be
protected from the animals in order to gain access into it, while the one
allocated for grazing will be in used for the animals.
Animals are
related through the various paddocks during grazing by moving them from one
paddock to another. This movement enables the different paddock to regenerate. The
rate of grazing will depend largely on the condition of the pasture.
Advantages
- It helps the farmer to utilize the pasture when young and highly nutritive.
- It allows the plant enough time to regenerate after grazing.
- Helps the farmer to control tick infestation
Differ grazing
To get
involve in differ grazing, you must therefore go the extra mile in considering
material that can withstand the season and still be of high productivity.
Advantages
- Allow to get forage material at the period of scarcity.
- Some of the recommended species are giant star grass, guinea grass, Elephant grass and so on.
