The importance of communication in Agricultural Extension Service

In agricultural extension service, massages strongly rely on farmers experience as well as agricultural research findings. Government policies are important for decision making by farmers. In this case, agricultural administrators give directives through communication. This is done verbally, in written form or both. Extension officers can only make farmers as well as other rural dwellers to participate in the process in identifying the problems they face through communication. Farmers and other rural dwellers are made to become aware of their problems through effective communication with extension officers and through communication among the farmers themselves.

It is through communication that coordination can take place in agricultural extension services. Coordination within and between all the extensions organization is by communications. At field level, coordination of contact farmers or opinion leaders by extension officers can only take place through effective communication.

Planning is made possible in extension organization or institutions through communication with farmers and other rural dwellers. It is base on the outcome of communication within the farmers and other rural families that one can become aware of the problem associated with them and planning can then be possible. Planning cannot be done in a vacuum. There must be a problem that will require solution before planning can take place. The importance of communication can also be realized through control. In agricultural extension agencies, control in hierarchical level is made possible through communication.

Communication is the unavoidable tool that makes organization work out possible. It is the vehicle through which the basic managerial and administrative functions are carried out. Managers and administrators direct through communication.
