The implements
used for tillage operations are classified and known as tillage implements. These
implements can be broadly classified and named after three major group which are
as follows;
- Primary tillage implements
- Secondary tillage implements
- Cultivating tillage implements
The classification
of these implements is on the basis of their soil – tilling, a characteristic
which includes depth of work of the implement, cutting aggressiveness and
nature of the soil surface left after the tillage actions.
It is
possible to use one or more implements in one class to carry out tillage
operations in another class as long as the implements are suitably adapted or
adjusted to perform the tillage action that is a characteristic of the
implements in that same class in question. An offset disc harrow, for example,
fitted with large concave discs will perform satisfactorily as a primary
tillage implement. Likewise, the adjustment of the gang angle which controls the
implements cutting aggressiveness that can enhance its performance in another
class.
