PROTEIN NUTRIENT REQUIREMENTS OF SHEEP AND GOAT PRODUCTION

In small ruminants such as Sheep and Goat, the amount of protein required is more important than the quality of protein. When protein supplementation of the production is the primary objective, the cost per pound of protein is then the most important consideration. Protein generally is used to repair older tissues and to build new tissues. Protein deficiency is more detrimental to the young animal, so an adequate proportion of protein must be supplied if rapid growth and high production are to be obtained in any small ruminant production. On the other hand, excessive feeding to the animal is expensive.
