The spike-tooth
harrow is given such a name because of the teeth in which it is made of that
stir the soil, resembles long spikes, unlike the spring-tine harrow, one or
more of its sections ranging from 120cm to 180cm wide. The numbers of spikes
per section of the spike-tooth harrow ranges from twenty-five to thirty-five
teeth. The section may be flexible or rigid. The principle behind it is to
smooth and levels the soil directly after harrowing with disc harrow in order
to provide a suitable seedbed for planting. It is also used to cover small
seeds broadcast over the surface. It is an excellent tool for pre-emergence
cultivation to break the rain-formed crust and destroy small weeds.
