Factors affecting seed viability

There are different factors which affect the viability of seed, these factors includes the following;

Seed coat: The seed coat affect seed viability in that some are differ in permeability which causes some viable seeds to absorb the terazolium solution slowly and to be lightly stained at the end. In the same vein, when the seed coat is impermeable and water is needed for germination at the place. Seed viability test using germination method is usually very difficult.

Mechanical damage: Mechanical damage also affects seed viability. The seed should be examined carefully at the point of hypocotyle and cotyledons as any damage done to these either during or after harvesting may hinder the seed from germinating. Therefore, at harvesting and transportation from the place of production of the seed, care should be taken in other to avoid damage of the seed.

Deterioration: Spoilage of the seeds also affects the viability of the seed.
