The communication
process involves a sender, a messager and a receiver. It implies that if one
factor amongst sender, messager and receiver is missing from the process,
communication cannot take place. We can send massage, but if it is not heard or
received by the receiver, it is then said that no communication has occurred.
The basic
elements of communication are more than the three elements mentioned above (sender,
messager and receiver). There are numbers of critical elements in
communication. These include the sender, idea, encoding, message, medium, receiver,
decoding, reaction, feedback and noise. The process can be briefly explained
thus; an agricultural extension officer has an idea to transmit to a farmer or
group of farmers. In executing this, the extension officer, sender, transforms
the idea into a meaningful form to form the message and sends it verbally or in
a written form. The message is then received by the farmer or group of farmers
and translated to make meaning of him. The farmer/group of farmers acknowledges
receipt of the message and does something about it. The farmer/group of farmer’s
reaction or non-reaction forms the feedback to the extension officer. Response or
non-response is the message sent to the sender by the receiver.
